Thinking of getting one from my college bookstore.. no special prices or anything but it seems to be the most convienent place to get a laptop. Ordering off of Dell just doesn't seem very practical.. plus I'd like something studier than an Inspiron.

They've got two Centrino based notebooks.. both R40s... just different specs

Pentium M 1.5
256mb
CDRW/DVD
60GB drive
15" SXGA
Radeon 7500 32mb (gaming is not important.. Half Life mods at most)
XP Pro
6.7lbs
$2181 CND (before taxes)

Only thing I have against the R40 is that it looks a bit bulky. I'm not sure of the battery life either. A friend had her R40 in class and it went from 69% to about 39% after an hour and a half lecture. Does that seem about right?

I'd look into a T40 but they're out of my price range.. and the only place I'd find them is on eBay and I'd hate to get hit with taxes or customs if I ship it from the States :(

anyway.. if you R40 owners would like to give me your opinion on the laptop, I'd appreciate it .. thanks

The R40 should get more battery time than the T40 since it uses a bigger battery. Remember that the R40 was designed for the Pentium 4-M. IBM simply put an i855 mobo inside when they wanted to give some Centrino options. The Battery AFAIK is the same.

Your friend might have set the performance to maximum, causing the CPU to run at max clockspeed and waste energy.

The R40 also has a firewire port, which the T40 lacks. Overall, the R40 is a good workhorse machine, even if it isn't the slickest.

Cool, thanks for the info. Anyone else have any input? I might decide on getting this within the week :)
