Any hotel recommendations in Hong Kong?

I'll be in Hong Kong for a couple days and was hoping for some suggestions with good hotels and decent prices. I want to be near the nightlife / shopping area. I would like the hotel to be at least 3 star though.

On expedia, the prices seem pretty good but I can't tell if it's a good location / price etc.

Any help would be appreciated

We stayed at the Grand Stanford InterContinental, which is in Kowloon right near Hung Hom Station. While it's away from the center, it's hardly a long trip -- maybe 10 minutes walking or a couple US dollars for a quick cab ride. If you're in the lower section of Kowloon (south of Mongkok), you're not going to be far away from the hotspots near/on Nathan Road. The InterCon is VERY nice and was quiet. It also has a really nice pool on the roof with a decent gym. Room rate was about $125/night.

If you're looking to stay on Hong Kong Island -- can't help you. 🙂

Enjoy yourself -- Hong Kong is officially one of my favorite places and that's after visiting over 20 countries. One piece of advice: if you're into photography, do your homework to avoid getting ripped off, but there are some AWESOME places for camera gear there. Second piece of advice: Think about investing a few hundred dollars in tailored clothing but don't listen to the guys on the street for where to go -- do your own research.

Oh, and I'm jealous! Have fun.

we stayed at the new world renaissance in kowloon Tsim Sha Tsui area back in Nov, 04, it was cheap and has the best location, we booked it thur precisionreservations.com for like $78+12tax a night, the rate from the hotel website (its part of marriott chain, if points are important to you) was around $220 at the time. good luck!

there are few different renaissance hotels in hk, make sure you get the right one, again the one we stayed at was "new world renaissance in tsim sha tsui", the other ones are actually in bad area.

what's your price range? hotels can get exponentially expensive as you get closer to downtown. YMCA (I am guessing 100 US bucks a night) is in front of the Kowloon hotel and next to the extra-exclusive Peninsula Hotel, there's a possible harbor view but that will definitely not be under the 100 dollar price bracket. the Grand Stanford is okay if you don't mind a bit of communting, which is a part of experiencing HongKong.

Tsim Sha Tsui is quite a broad area: YCMA is on the west side and the New World Renaissance is on the east. you will have to do quite a bit of walking to get between both places. personally I would choose the west side as it is closer to MTR (subway) stations.

basic info: Tsim Sha Tsui is on the Kowloon side. ie: north of the victoria habor.
hongkong island is south of the habor. you can take either the MTR or the ferry (which is much cheaper. ferry = 2 HK dollars or 40 cents; MTR from TsimShaTsui to Central (first station across the habor) is 8 HK or 1.2 US dollar. places you want to visit for nightlife is "LanKwai Fong", 4 minute walk from Central MTR station (D1 exit).
for shopping, checking out "Causway Bay", third or fourth MTR stations away from "Central." "Stanley Market" and "The Peak" is nice and all but you only got 2 days so i think TsimShaTsui, Causway Bay, and Central would be sufficient.

hotels on the hongkong island side that is under 150 bucks would be in the "WanChai" area. not particularly the most extravagent area but its decent. 3 star I would say. New Century hotel and Novotel will probably satisfy you. "Wanchai" is nicely located in between Central and CausewayBay. you can take the Tram (ala doubledeck electric cable car) which is 2 dollars or the MTR between those places on the HK Island side. (note: tram is not available on the Kowloon side. Tram is only East bound or West bound. just get on one of them, get off at places you seem to like, and then hoop back on the reverse bound when you're done.
also, there's a bar scene in WanChai too, but LanKwai Fong would be a whole lot better.

nice detail info!
makes me want to go visit HK!

thank you for all your help guys. what's funny is that my mother is originally from hong kong but hasn't been back in over 20 years. so she has no clue on where to stay. i'll be visiting asia in may for a couple weeks and so i decided to swing by hong kong and see what it has to offer.

now this may sound stupid but i'll ask anyways. is HKG, the airport, on hong kong island? or is it located on the "new territories"?

no...the airport is in on Lantau island but, the MTR connects right at the airport so it is super convenient. The ride takes no more than 30 mins to Central on HK island.

yeah, but 30 minutes in HongKong time is eternity 🙂
yes, the MTR connects throughout, but I much rather pay more to live on the island or kowloon side. Lantau Island is just too far out, plus there's nothing to do there.

remember, since no one drives in HK "10 minutes away" is a whole lot further compare to US terms because you either have to walk or commute.

btw: do take the "direct" airport express train which cost, I believe, 100 HK dollars, it is much more convinent than the regular MTR (because there's countless transfer) or the bus (which is okay and cost only 40 bucks between airport and HK island), but if you don't know where you are going, the bus is not the best idea.
the "Direct" airport Express train only has 4 stops, the two you will only concern are the "Kowloon" stop and the "Hong Kong" stop. From those two stations there are FREE shuttle service (between 8 to 11:00pm) connecting to Major hotels. If you know where your hotel is you can take those shuttle, get off at the nearest hotel, and walk from there.
However, there is a 30 minute wait for those shuttles. If you don't want to wait, you can take the taxi. Fyi, they will charge 5 buck per luggagge placed in the truck. Tipping is on your own discretion. So is for restuarants. Restaurants usually (95percent) charge a 10% service charge which constitute the tipping already. and there's no sale tax in HK. So get your LV Gucci Ferragamo there! 🙂
