Any hope for the dalits? Will they ever be equal? Will the prejudice against them ever stop? IF so how long will it be before they can actually make any change. 50 years 100 years, 1000. What can we do, can we learn anything from history. "Dalit" is sort of the new name. IT was formally untouchables or outcasts.

I believe it was Dr. Who that one said "The Daleks will never be equal to humans, except in treachery."

I think he was right and as long as I live I will fight the Daleks with my every breath.

Now....where did I leave my Tardis???

i think *hope* as India becomes increasingly westernized, Indians will pick up the good points of the West, and not just the bad: promiscuity, teenage smoking, drinking, drugs, outlandish behavior, etc. So far, unfortunately, I have seen with the advent of MTV India and such, a decline in the value system of Indians. I am born and raised in the U.S. but recognize that there are many ills to this culture. Disrespect, false bravado, etc.

The good things are, that in general, people are treated more equal here. Don't get me wrong, blacks are still terribly discriminated against in this country, whether people like to admit it or not, it happens. But it is still better and not as prevalent as the discrimination that occurs in India.

In addition to the western influence, as India develops, and more and more people get better education, this discrimination should, i would think, start declining.

Only the backward, uneducated fools think they are better than another because of their skin color. I'm far fairer than most Indians (including the so called highest Brahmin castes - my family is Khatri), yet I don't go around spitting in Brahmins faces because they are a differen't "race," color, what not.

A one line answer to your question: Yes, there is hope.

thanks for your insight. Im am an african american individual living in the US and i was very curious of how Indians, those born back home as well as ones born here feel about the current situation. I have found very few that will even discuss it.

wow, i never even knew about this. as for what we do, i say we should place an embargo on India for human rights abuses. granted, most people don't seem to care much about anyone but themselves so that is probably not going to happpen; but it would be the right thing to do.
