Any home theatre gurus here?

I?m coming into a little money in the next few weeks and would like to finish my home entertainment system in the master bedroom. So far I have only the LCD TV and the HD Set Top Box from our cable company. I would like to add a DVD Player and a 5.1 speaker system. The budget is ~$5,000 Cdn (including purchasing furniture to hold the components).

Any suggestions regarding which DVD players, speakers or home theatre receivers I should look at?

IMO in that price range, you really want HDMI switching on your receiver. The new Denon AVR-2807 is a great unit for the money; I'd also look at the Yamaha HDMI-capable units.

As for the DVD player, if your TV has good upscaling conversion you may just want a decent, inexpensive progressive-scan player, on the theory that it's not worth spending more for an upscaling player with HD-DVD and Blu-Ray hitting the market. If you decide to go with an upscaling unit, Denon, Oppo, and Sony make good ones.

There are simply too many speakers to make a broad recommendation there. Personally I'd go for a quality powered subwoofer (say, a Hsu Research or SVS), and test-drive a lot of speakers before you buy. Personally I have Phase Technology speakers, but they are just one of literally dozens of reputable manufacturers.

I agree with most of what Don says. I stuck with the great combination of the Klipsch Reference 5 series with a Denon 3806 receiver series. For the DVD player I got a Panasonic 5 disc progressive changer that was highly rated at the time (2 years ago). I've got it mated with a 50" Plasma.

The best thing to do is go to a few places and test the speakers. They are ALL subjective. You might love Klipsch, or might hate the horns. It all depends on the person. See what YOU like in your price range. Then check online for better deals. That's mostly what I did.

Get cables from places like Bluejeancables.com or cablesforless.com Get good cables, but not overly expensive ones 🙂 They sell top quality stuff for cheap.
