Looking into to one of these...biggest complaint is the poor mileage that people are getting.

This is a critical point for my new purchase, so i appreciate your candor.

I only know one person that has one. (Won't call it gospel)

But he has driving all over the board. Some weeks lots of freeway. Some weeks lots of street.

His is the i-4 auto and he gets around 20 in the city and has not been able to break 30 in freeway driving. (29 best).

I was highly considering this car also, but when a Camry will beat that by a good 10%, I just can't consider it. (at least not in the i-4)

The new 190HP I-4 or the 160HP one?

2 factors :

(1)- The accord most likely has a larger tank.

(2)- Fuel gauges are frequently inaccurate, and in my general experience, a full tank is indicated after a fillup even after a moderate amount of miles have been driven. In my '08 Focus, I can drive ~60-70 miles before the needle budges from full, then it steadily drops from there. In my case, I can get ~160 miles before I hit the halfway mark, then another ~120 before the needle is next to E and my fuel light comes on.

That's disappointing to hear. I get better than EPA mileage in my 04 for city - about 26 city (rated at 24). Highway I only get about 30-32 (rated at 34). Didn't think there was that much of a difference...wonder why the real world estimates are so off, especially with the EPA's new testing system.

I have a 2008 Accord V6 sedan. I've been consistently getting ~475 miles per tank, which works out to approximately 26MPG combined. On a two hour highway cruise, I got 37mpg going (more downhill) and 30mpg coming back with the cruise control set at 70mph.

I haven't driven a car yet that I couldn't beat the EPA mileage. Most people seem to think they can constantly accelerate to 4k+ rpms from a stop, never monitor their tire pressure, and drive at 80+mph and still get EPA mileage.. and for the most part that simply won't happen. The saddest thing I saw was someone in a Prius flooring it at every stop light, only to catch the next red light, over and over again. WTF is the point of that?

Generally, toyota transmission gearing is a little better than honda's for economy, at the expense of acceleration. However, I think a more important factor is that people get in hondas tend to drive them more aggressively, and that accounts for the bulk of the economy difference. The same driver, with a similar attention to economy driving is not going to notice a big difference. The last time I drove an accord (2007 i4 manual), it returned over 36 mpg in mountain and urban driving.

Wow..that is impressive mileage, considering what most are posting as their mileage. Do you like the vehicle? Does the variable cylinder management drive you crazy as many other people are complaining about? Such as the vibration and the weird shifting? I just drove the larger 4 cylinder. It idled rough and did not seem to shift as smooth and of course was louder than expected. I would not mind the six...if it proved worthy of the extra buckers... maybe the Camry is a better vehicle... but with reading all the complaints about it, I stayed away. Perhaps i should drive one of those..but you get the v6 in one of those..and you are getting high dollar...might as well get an avalon.

thanks for the feedback

I'm very happy with the car. I love VCM - unless you keep an eye on the VCM indicator light and pay a lot of attention, you'll never notice it. At least, I don't. No vibrations or weird shifting. Using VCM has really helped me get higher MPG.
The engine does idle somewhat noisy (from the outside, it's quiet inside), but it idles smooth. To me it's only noisy because on my previous car (99 ML430) the radiator fan was soooooooo loud that you really couldn't hear anything else over that.

I drove the Camry and Avalon. I did not like either - they both felt too floaty and isolated. I felt like I had to break before entering on/off ramps or soft turns where I could otherwise maintain the same speed on the Accord, or even pick up a little speed. Yeah they are a little more comfortable on the highway, but the Accord is still comfortable and overall more enjoyable.

My parents got the 190hp 4 cylinder about a month ago. I'll ask them what they are getting. They don't encounter much traffic where they are at though. 75% highway driving.

Isn't it true vehicles don't get their real gas mileage till way after break-in? Like 10k miles? Parts break-in is ~1500 miles.

Not for all vehicles. My TSX got the same mileage new that it does now (49k). IIRC, the I4 in the new accord is a variant of the TSX engine (or vice-versa).

Please. This would be great. I am thinking of both as options as well as the Altima...

This is the I4 EX with 190 hp

How new is the car? Typically mileage doesn't get good until after 3,000-5,000 miles in my experience.

So far about 26-28mpg. And that is with my mom's lead foot.

Damn, my Maxima gets 19mpg city. My wife's Lexus IS250 gets 23-24 city and 32 highway.
