Hi all.

I recently came across this PC Setup:

1.4Ghz 266mhzFSB Socket A Athlon
IWill KA266 MainBoard
1x256meg PC2100 DDR Ram.
VisionTek Geforce2 GTS 32meg.

I hooked it all up and installed Windows 98. I was on my way to installing the 12.41 WHQL Detonators when Explorer crashed. from here on I have been getting extreme instability from a fresh installation of Windows 98 and i am getting instabilities everywhere. in fact when i reinstalled windows 98 I got an illegal operation in SETUP.

various BSOD's have included VMM VXD problems among other things. I tried installing both Windows 98 and Windows 98 SE and am getting the same problems. I installed the Ali Magik 1 drivers to no avail. i updated the bios of the motherboard(May-08 i think) and it didnt help.

Does anyone know or at least have any clue why this is not working? Thanks in advance.

Look here for some very good info and fixes.

Also, some people have solved VMM errors by installing "Microsoft Virtual Machine". I think you can d/l it using Win98's Windows Update or from download.com.

the order is kind of important...
there are some threads on installs that detail this but what works for me is:
--starting from mb, proc, mem, video card, 1 hd, cd
1. install os
2. install mb drivers including ali for your mb. (i have this mb, install system on the primary master ide)
3. install video drivers
4. install cards and drivers 1 at a time.

this works for me
good luck

Thats your problem.

j/k
but novalogic is probably on to something with those VIA drivers. they tend to cause problems. You also might want to try windows update. I would assume you are talking about 98SE.
But you should consider Win2000, it was definitely the best decision i ever made.
