Hi:
I posted this also on Operating Systems. I tried suggestions there but no help. Maybe someone will have an idea:
Explorer keeps crashing, but in random ways. I'll open it and it will crash, three times in a row, then next time, it lets me do my business without a hitch.
When it bombs, it shows this message"
Explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program.
An error log is being created."
Then the whole desktop goes to blue for a couple seconds, then restores itself.
I found two copies of explorer.exe: one in WINNT, the other in WINNT/ServicePackFiles/i386. I remmed out the second one, but haven't really tested it yet.
Other problems: Explorer directory tree shows plus boxes to left of all directories, even those without subdirectories. And sometimes programs that are opened and running don't show up when minimized on the status bar at bottom. Again, a random error.
Are these routine bugs? Anybody got any ideas? This is a clean install on a new system, on a newly (re)formatted drive. Asus a7v133 w/1.33 gig Axia chip, 2-40gig Maxtor DiamondMax 60s, 768MB memory (Crucial CAS2) (set I believe to 147 Mhz, 2-2-2), no overclocking, BIOS system performance set to normal rather optimal.
after checking Event Viewer in Manage:
In Application, there were a couple hundred. Most appeared normal. The only errors were 7 or 8. Source: perflib. Message:
T he timeout waiting for the performance data collection function "PerfOS" in the "C:\WINNT\System32\perfos.dll" Library to finish has expired. There may be a problem with this extensible counter or the service it is collecting data from or the system may have been very busy when this call was attempted.
There were also 10, source: Dr. Watson. This was the error I mentioned. message:
The application, explorer.exe, generated an application error The error occurred on 06/04/2001 @ 23:48:20.499 The exception generated was c0000005 at address 01CB16CF (RemoveHooks)
Most of the rest seemed pretty normal: events started and stopped, etc.
Nothing in security or IExplore at all.
Other checks: no hardware or IRQ conflicts.
Also these arcane problems:
Here's some more, in Application or System:
source: Winlogon. EventID: 1002
The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted.
And several of these:
The description for Event ID ( 13 ) in Source ( WindowsUpdateV3 ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. The following information is part of the event: V3_2|63454|INSTALL|Yamaha Corporation - Audio|08/01/2000|2001-06-02 16:28:07|3|FAIL|0x8007000d|The data is invalid.|.
Each one of these targeted a different application, such as Windows Critical Update Notification, Windows Media Player 7.1. Except for the Yamaha audio driver above, all the rest said SUCCESS at the end.
Also, I overlooked this one, which was mixed in with the explorer.exe errors:
source: DrWatson
The application, mmc.exe, generated an application error The error occurred on 06/03/2001 @ 15:41:03.344 The exception generated was c0000005 at address 770100AE (Ordinal6122)
And finally, I had this one several times, only when I closed out of WordPerfect9. Source: Application Popup
Application popup: PerfectFont: wpwin9.exe - Application Error : The instruction at "0x00e56707" referenced memory at "0x00e71e94". The memory could not be "read".
Thanks and appreciate any help, I'm stumped.
