i was ordering the zalman 7000 hsf for my asus p4p800vm board and figured i'd throw in a vantec chipset hsf too, replacing the passive hs and hooking it up to a fan controller.
the original hs is attached by clips, easy enough to get off and i figured worse case i could attach the new hsf with tape or AS adhesive. when i took of the original hs tho, it has a square of foam attached to it with the old thermal pad i think in the middle of it with about 1/4" around it? it looks like the NB sits up as well as some small nubs(?) about 8 pair, and that the nubs press into the foam, which has no adhesive quality. what is this? i never did a northbridge before and it looks like the vantec hsf would crush things up.
any ideas?
