some money may come my way in a few months, so i'm wondering if there's anything to look out for? something like the next DX10 or Core 2 Duo platform? i just need general things to think about (specific manufacturers/brands would help) so i can research a bit to see if there's something that sparks my interest.

i'm not looking for things like Asus coming out with driver updates or Microsoft allowing Vista users to downgrade to XP...you know?

if anything comes across your mind, don't be shy, just post :D

thanks ATOT

(btw, i figured this isn't too relevant to General Hardware but if it is, if a Mod could do their thing...)

Intel's 45nm CPUs (Yorkfield/Wolfdale) debut in November in the form of $1000 Extreme Edition CPUs. The non-EE variants will come in January. Expect 5-10% performance improvement over current Conroe/Kentsfield CPUs. SSE4 optimized applications may reveal higher gains - there was a DivX encoder benchmark that showed ~80% improvement IIRC.
I think AMD's Phenom is supposed to launch in November but no one is excited about that.

The next refresh from AMD (the 55nm RV670) will support Shader Model 4.1 (as opposed to the current 4.0) but this doesn't really mean anything.

Seagate's 7200.11 series has just launched but haven't become common yet - they have some great specs and are supposed to be significantly faster than current hard drives. Samsung's F1 series of hard drives is supposed to be even better but no benchmarks yet.

And yeah, Microsoft's Zune gets updated tomorrow.

Apple is coming out with their newest innovation... the iBrick.

Its big, heavy, and does absolutely nothing, but you must have one.
Oh and if you try to use it install it into a brick wall it will crumble on purpose.

It's quite expensive, not available in the US, and very small, but Sony's releasing an 11 inch OLED with a million to 1 contrast ratio and 40% lower power usage than an LCD.

I read AMD is coming out with triple core chips to go up against Intel's quad cores. Unfortunately they are well behind in that department.

thanks for the post guys...even you, sao :p

theprodigalrebel: why isn't anyone excited about AMD's Phenom? is it expected to be slower than the C2D's?

about the Seagate and Samsung, that's good to hear. if samsung gets any quicker, i'll probably just get one of those, unless somehow seagate beats samsung in the acoustics and thermals tests.

BurnitDwn/Engraver: it's a little steep for what you get, but it's something i'll definitely look forward to buying a a year or two.

i like the ideas. anyone else that can chime in?
