Any guys ever gone for a urethral swab (STD test)?

A friend of mine needs to go for one of these tommorow. He is currently pacing the room behind me worried because we just finished reading many things on the internet about it and how it is one of the most painful things a man has to go through.

Anyone have any first hand experience with one of these things, and are there any alternatives to what sounds like a living hell?

Do they do that for all std tests? I thought they did something different than that. Its probably not all that painful, well at least probably not as painful as they make is sound. The most painful thing a man has to go through is a spinal tap or at least thats what I would consider the most painful, though I have never had an urethral swab. How do they do it?

A cold metallic swab is inserted a few centimeters into the urethra for a few seconds to collect samples of urethral discharge.

Why does he need it done? Because he wants to, sort of. So he can feel clean, if he is indeed so.

I've never had it done (I'm married) but a friend did and swears up and down it was the most painful and awful thing you could ever do to a man.

had it done a few months ago. it wasn't really painful. its more like having a total stranger hold a knife to your throat kinda scary and just weird feeling.

I've had a catheter before, and if its anything like that, bring the painkillers.
Its like so much pressure !

A guy in my fraternity that knew something was wrong was so scared that he squeezed it so hard he made something come out, saying to the doc "See, see, there's something wrong"....I hate to say this, but I'd be scared too.

That's what he is hoping for, but still, the thought of having something stuck in there is kind of creepy..

dude, i'm a veteran of the old urethral swab. i was stationed in korea for a year. there was just too much eager beaver over there.

back then we'd have to go to the STD clinic for the "ream and scream." some dorky dude would ask you to "present your penis." it's funny as hell now, but back then it was scary the first couple of times. then he'd take a cotton swab, stick it in, and twirl. this guy was mean. he would give us lectures on the evils of such a thing. i think he wanted to discourage us so he would just twirl and twirl and twirl. sometimes he go really deep, too. that's what hurt the most. i've had far worse medical things done to me than that. i had blood drawn from under my knee cap. no pain killers, nothing, just a giant needle poking around under my knee. i almost passed out from that.

i think it's 75% mental. you expect it to hurt (like the dentist) so it does. it's not that bad.

That sounds like alot of pain, but hardly the worst thing you can do to a man.
Let me tell you what is the worst thing you can do to a man, from experience. Have a kidney stone too big to pass, but not big enough to break up using that shockwave therapy(cant remember exactly thats its called).
Then running a tube with microscope and tiny forceps on the end down a man's schnitzel all the way to the kidney to extract the offending stone. And as an added bonus, leaving 1 1/2' of tubing in the canal just to the end of the schnitzel with green thread tied to it so they can pull it out later while your awake, totally coherent.
Oh..yea...with a 20something female student doctor watching!

I've had it done a few times. Not something to look forward to but you're not going to run around in pain screaming either. Mostly just a bit of discomfort and sort of unpleasant feeling.

I worked in hospitals for close to 20 yrs, they only do this test when the guy keeps becoming symptomatic but normal test results come in with non-specific results, or when a woman he's involved with keeps having reoccuring infections
and it's suspected he's a carrier...remember, a lot of pretty damaging STD's can remain silient till your reproductive tract is pretty messed up.


The test is uncomfortable but a lot less uncomfortable than an STD marching up a woman's fallopian tubes

I've already a DAM SEXY (from what I remember I was 12 at the time I think?) nurse strip me naked and then continue to prod around my groin and ask is it hurting? Like heck it hurts! A guy has studded me in the groin with a football boots with 6 metal studs! NOT good. Dam I was embarrest as hell at the time, I was about 12. And getting hard WAS the last thing on my mind at that age! The pain was bad, my abbs were bruised and so too was everything else........

I had it done years ago in a battery of tests before I went abroad. Swab (not metallic) was inserted for a sample and brought back out. Didn't take any time at all. Wasn't that big of a deal.
