Any good web design & management schools?

Im kinda college surfing right now. Ive been thinking about changing my field of study from Network management to webpage design. I was just wondering if anyone knows of any really good schools to consider. I live in Michigan by the way. So perhaps something near by.

I dont even know what this profession is called... web design and management right?

any help is appreciated!

I don't know of many colleges that offer "webpage design." That sounds more like what you'd get at a trade school, and if that's specifically what you want that might not be a bad option.

Many colleges offer design programs, but it's not specifically webpage design. A quick Googling turned up this that might give you a better idea. I know a lot of ATOTers are in design, so perhaps they have more specific info, or perhaps I'm wrong entirely.

Many colleges today offer somethin akin to "digital media" degrees, which are basically art programs with some computer science thrown in to round off the student.

That's a fvcking terrible job market you know. I really would caution anyone who wants a technical job against taking any degree "lower" than CS. It's russian roulette...

it is? why do you say that? how do you know? I have a frient in IT and he says the market is big... and im getting interested since i like to design websites...

IMO, it's better to learn it by yourself because some of the teachers are stuck on "oldschool" and deprecated web design (table layouts in html, font tags, no css, etc). The people that I know who are talented web designers are mostly self-taught, reading tutorials, ebooks, on their own time. Join a web design forum, read the threads, learn from people, etc.. I think thats a much better way than learning deprecated scripting in a class.

As far as having a business making web pages, I think that's a waste of talent. There are loads of teenagers out there that can design websites, but the time it takes to design a website isn't worth it because you sell it for so damn cheap ($50-100 or so I think is the avg price).

If you do become good though, and that requires knowing ASP.NET and/or PHP+MYSQL + Javascript + XHTML/CSS + a bunch of other stuff, you can become a freelancer and do projects that go for hundreds and sometimes thousands of $$$..

Yes, you are exactly right. I just keep thinking that I need a degree to prove that I know the stuff...but its mainly who you know.

Its funny because you get ahead if you dont play by all the "rules." You have to be smarter and better. I guess it pays to be elite.

A good portfolio would be much better than a degree, IMO. I don't think I've seen any companies hiring people who are certified in web design, they just list requirements such as knowing languages..

GOOD web designers are not.
Unfortunately too many people doing hiring have no idea what good design is.
