Any good way to get the smell out of........

.......my garbage disposal? There is a nice funk left over from the previous tenant of this house. Running it only seems to aggitate the smell.

I've heard baking soda can help with these things, but I also wanted to see if the collective wisdom of ATOT could offer any other (real) suggestions.

On a side note: I'm typing this from my newest creation the "Kitchen PC". I now have puters' in every room of the house (even a laptop for the bathroom .

I've always found CLR works wonders.

a conconction of baking powder and various cleaning agents should do the trick. adding ice cubes probably isnt a bad idea.

Plumbers have always told me to use ice cubes to clean the garbage disposal. Just start it up and pour them in, the brokent ice cleans the thing out.

Ice cubes are great, I throw some in frequently, they clean up the disposal & melt...

Chucking in some ice with baking soda is a good idea too...

I don't know if it'd be safe for a garbage disposal, or any machinery, but Oxyclean does wonders when it comes to smells like that. Anyone know if its safe or not?

The smell is caused by grease that is getting rancid in the pipes to the trap.

If you can take out the rubber gasket thing that you push the foods through on the way to the blades, scrub the bottom side of it with soap and a brush. It's usually got a thick, septic-smelling black-gunk-of-doom plastered to it. I usually run it through the dishwasher once a month or so after scrubbing it.

Yeah but ice is just water. Might just as well run the water.

I don't usually have a smelly disposal but I sometimes use either baking soda or bleach.
