My wife says that there are some around one of the 5 Finger lakes that she wants to go to. Any others (preferably closer to NYC)?

You have many on the North Fork out east on Long Island.

My wife and I hit many out on the Island a couple of years ago when there for my Class Re-Union and on the way back to Chicago went through Canada via Niagara Falls and hit many Wineries along Lake Ontario.

Cheers

New York is the 3rd largest wine growing region in America and Long Island is considered the premier area in the state for wines - producing over 500,000 cases of wine annually. Today more than one-million people visit the 50+ wine producers on Long Island, taking advantage of their tours, tastings, and event hosting.

There are a ton on the American side of the Niagara River.

Just minutes from Niagara Falls and Buffalo, the Niagara Wine Trail USA is regarded as a new up-and-coming region, but the art and science of grape growing and winemaking has been in our area for many years. There are records of a winery that was open during the 19th century, and one of our current member wineries produces fruit on vineyards that are over one hundred years old.

The Niagara Wine Trail, USA is situated between the Niagara Escarpment and Lake Ontario. This geography has created a unique micro-climate, suitable for the production of the grapes that we use to create our fine wines. The character of our local soils, from the dolomitic limestone soils of the Escarpment to the gravel silts near the lakeshore, and our moderate climate ideal for growing a wide variety of fruit, including vinifera grapes such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Merlot.

There are a ton along the lake just west of Niagara Falls on the Canadian side.

The entire Niagara wine region along the shores of Lake Ontario-is home to over 50 wineries.

Twenty-five vineyards dot the landscape just 15 to 20 minutes outside Niagara Falls, Canada in quiet and charming Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Niagara region is more than five hours from the city, but the Finger Lakes region is within your range. A lot of good vineyards in that area, and a lot of "tours" available that hit a lot of the wineries. Also, I'm not so sure about Long Island being the premier area; a Google search of best wine in NY returns a lot more sites where Finger Lakes wines were voted as best. Maybe LI wins in quantity; but quality>quantity. And unless I'm mistaken, there are a lot more wineries in the Finger Lakes region than in the Niagara region. http://www.fingerlakes.org/things-to-do/wineries-more (70 on that page)

Don't go to the Niagara region, it isn't nearly as good as the Finger Lakes region. I went on one wine tour in the Niagara region, and the vineyards were less than stellar and the drive-time between them is long. I've gone on a couple in the Finger Lakes, much better and the views are beautiful.

Thanks, guys. Also, is mid to late May a good time to visit? Is there a season for wineries?

My friends and I go to Warwick Valley Winery a few times a year from NYC. The food and wine is top notch and best of all it is dog friendly. We pack up a van with all of our mutts and spend the day there.

I love this one, and always come away with 2, or 3 cases. It has the best *REAL* cherry wine I have ever tasted. They grow their own cherries right there. It is so warm, and friendly there you could easily spend all afternoon.

May is as good a time as any. Wineries usually have events like barrel tasting in March or so, bottling is usually in late fall, otherwise there isn't much else other than harvesting and normal growing routines which occur from early spring through late fall.

i was gonna say that Jersey has some decent wineries, but they are in south jersey area. Finger lakes are waaay prettier than south jersey...so go there instead. Im sure the wine is better there as well.
