Anyone know of a good set of knives for ~$50? We have a block, so doesn't need to come with one. We have been using a super cheap set for about 2 years and they are about finished. Don't think they are even worth sharpening. Can anything decent be found for $50? I saw a set of Henckel knives at bed bath and beyond for $59 I think, and we had a 20% coupon... they any good? I am pretty sure the Farberware ones at wal-mart are about as good of quality as we have now...i dont even know what brand they are.

any thoughts?

Pardon my ignorance, but why would you want a set of knives? I just use one big knife for everything (breaking eggs, slicing veggies and meat, taking skin off onion, etc).

yeah, that'd work. Passing the steak knife around the table so the others at the table could cut their steak, now that's what being a family is all about.

Oh, I thought OP was talking about a set of DIFFERENT sized knives. From small to large.

You should probably have a large chef's knife (8" or maybe 10"), a good paring knife, and a set of steak knives.

Henckels makes good stuff, so see if you can get something like that.

yeah i think the set of henckels had a chef knife, 5 or 6 steak knives, and a few other assorted ones. may also have had a pair of scissors. i just wasnt sure about what a good brand was...they looked like quality, but i dont really know too much. good info, thanks silver.

If it's a steak knife, I'd want it to be serrated. I don't like to fillet my beef...

I don't think there's a GOOD set of knives for $50, but the Henkels International knives aren't bad for the price. My wife picked up a set at Costco about 3 years ago, and they're OK...not great, but OK. (Not nearly as good as their 4-star stuff)

you absolutely do not need a SET of knives. get a FORSCHNER 8" chef's knife for 30$, a paring knife for <10$, a bread knife for 15$, and you shouldnt need a steak knife because if you cant cut through your steak with a regular dinner knife, the steaks not worth eating... but uh you can get a small serrated paring knife that forschner calls a tomato knife if you need anything like that...

read the amazon reviews for sets in your price range (many from professional chefs)

Ours includes a pair of scissors, 8" chef's knife, 3" paring knife, 6" boning knife, 4 steak knifes and a sharpening steel. $25 Chicago Cutlery set (clearance) at Linens N Things.

We use each knife consistently.

As far as quality goes, they are an ok set. They'll likely be replaced in 3-5 years, but by then my wife will probably lose one :p

The only reason why steak knives are serrated is because they cut on ceramic plates.
