Any good overclocking stories with a P4 2Ghz or 2.2Ghz processors?...

I am sure they are out there but the cost as made them not as popular...current intel yields are pretty much making all 1.6 and 1.8 with newer packing dates run at 2 and 2.2 ghz with stock voltage...They pretty much are all the same chip and likely hit same ending points....

The disadvantage ofcourse is the higher multiplier meaning 133fsb is not a lock at 2ghz and 2.2ghz is down right tough to do with vcore of 1.7v or less. W/o 133fsb many cant run the high memory speeds they want, run high system fsb's, or in some cases can't run agp/pci devices in spec because they cant reach 1/4 divider at 133fsb...

Now the 2.26ghz p4b is doinmg quite well...check out pabster...I have heard of 2.6 to 2.7ghz at default vcore...I have heard 3ghz just the other day at lower vcore...no 1.8's...

The problem is the chip cost 250 still, which is more then double the 1.6's yet delivering in some case only about 200 more mhz max...When the 1.6's are completely phased out the 1.8,2,2.2 and 2.26ghz chips should drop and feel the lower ones spot...so we should look for the 2.26's to coime in around 200 soon...

ok, so are you saying that 2.0 or 2.2 is not gonna hit 3 at all while 2.26 should be able to hit 3 gig?

I am thinking of switching my AMD to P4. you give me a good reason to go with 2.26

my amd is hot hot hot.... need to change with p4 desperately.

so if I should go between 2.0, 2.2, and 2.26, you would recommend me to go with 2.26 considering price is not an issue?

thanks

stingbandel ~ P4s are multiplier locked and can only be fsb overclocked. coming from AMD im sure you know well that a lower multiplier = a happy overclocker. heres a list of P4s and their multipliers.

1.6A = 16x
1.8A = 18x
2.0A = 20x
2.2A = 22x
2.4A = 24x

2.26B = 17x
2.40B = 18x
2.53B = 19x

keep in mind that "B" cpus are almost twice the price of an "A" cpu.
does that list help explain this for you?

check my sig while your down here 😉

How is it that the P4 2.26Ghz CPU that runs at a FSB of 133 can go beyond the 133 FSB quite easily, making it a good overclocking CPU???

I am willing to hazard a guess. Maybe the "B" chips because of the necessity of running a higher fsb are the best of the batch. The cores are probably identical, just different multipliers and fsb settings when they package them.

But this is only a guess.

a cpu does not care 1 bit what its FSB is. all it wants to know is what its overall MHZ are.

the chip would not care if it is 16x150, 24x100, 20x120, 22x109 or 18x133 - it still has to run the same 2400mhz.

remember tho - what you are buying is MULTIPLIER LOCKED. you can only overclock the fsb. make your decision wisely 😉

It is just fact so far....The 2.26ghz is a p4b and maybe incorporating a new stepping (june packing)....I have heard of a few now doing 2.6-2.7 at default vcore....It just doesn't appear to be from the same mold as the 1.6's.😉

It is all speculation and you can still get a chip that ocs not very much...

If it didn't cost twice as much I would probably buy one...several 3ghz post with these as well...check other forums...we are a bit 1.6 happy here but others are burning a bit more money on the higher chips...

Thugs, I am jealous with your system 🙂

anyway, what's the temp that you get with that oc system?

I oc my amd up to 1872 and the temp is 70 celc. It's killing me. I want something that is somewhere around 50 celc max if I could.

about why I go with P4B or A, I don't think price is the issue since my boss is giving it to me. All I care is I can oc it to 3 gig.

Do you have any recommendation?

Thanks

PM me if I forgot to check this thread. Maybe we can discuss it more detail

Thanks once again.

money is not a problem between 2.0, 2.2 and 2.26. not more than that.

I hope this clear the confusion
