Any good opteron boards that dont require registered RAM?

I have 1 gig of 3200 RAM (pulled from an new computer that broke) that I want to turn into an opteron server but I cant find any good motherboards that dont require registered ram....

Question 2: This will be 90% SQL database server..... So would I be better off with an opteron or just get an AMD64 since I know there are plenty of motherboards that would work w/o registered ram?

Short answr is no. SKT 940 needs registered. I am not familiar with the needs of SQL so I can't say if going with 939 or 754 is a good idea vs selling your ram and going 940, so ^

Isn't it the memory controller itself that requires the use of registered RAM? If so, since the memory controller is embedded in the CPU itself, it's not really up to the motherboard manufacturers anyway.

You can make a single-CPU socket-939 machine with that unbuffered RAM.

saying that it is a sql server doesnt realy help as to opteron vs athlon64. Opteron might give you a a slight benefit (depending on speed of chips ie a 2.2 a64 will certainly beat a 1.8 opteron regardless of benchmarks), if you are thinking of going dual now or in the future then opteron otherwise i would suggest an a64 will be significantly cheaper and unless you are running masive databases with a significant number of users i doubt you will se much of a performance difference. Also considering you are going to be using only 1gig of ram i doubt the databases you will be running will be affected by going to a cheaper a64 vs an opteron.
