I have to choose a movie to write a research paper on. It has to be a "multicultural" film. Whatever that means. Any good multicultural films I can use?

Never said it had to be recent, the best ones are the older movies - this one is still pretty recent in my mind and it'd be very easy to write a paper on it.

This is a research paper of 6-10 pages. It attempts to analyze, evaluate, and/or judge a film from a multicultural perspective. For this assignment, you will write about a multicultural issue present in the film of your choice. This film may be a motion picture, documentary, etc. In beginning your essay, remember that multiculturalism extends past race. Your essay may focus on race, gender, religion, economic, and/or sexual orientation issues. How are interracial relationships portrayed? What images of black men are present on the screen? Are same-sex relationships erased from the screen? However, do not attempt to tackle all of these issues in one essay. The primary focus is to teach you how to develop an argument, support the argument with outside sources, and integrate or blend those sources with your voice.

For this paper, you may continue to think in terms of community or globally. The movie you choose may misrepresent communities and foster stereotypes. Or you can discuss the distribution of certain films and how this reflects United States policies or global policies. For example, Goodfellas portrays Italians?and the women they date?in a certain way. Are these views accurate or do they perpetuate existing American stereotypes? Similarly, Boys in the Hood does the same thing with African American community as does The Birdcage with the homosexual community. American History X takes the viewer into the lives of white supremacists, and The Contender shows the difficulties of a female serving as the United States?s Vice President. You may choose any movie you?d like to examine regarding an issue that stimulates your interests. These are merely suggestions to guide your thinking. You will want to have viewed or reviewed your movie by Friday, March 3 because on that day, you will hand in a 1-page review of the movie. I want you to give a brief synopsis of the plot then highlight the issues you are going to study in your paper.

Remember that as you research your topic, you must leave your room, leave your desk, and go talk to someone and/or reference outside sources. As I read your essay, I want to see you. I want to know why you are interested in this topic?why it engages you. We will work together to help you narrow and focus your essay and write a paper that explores a topic that you find interesting. You are expected to diversify your sources drawing from magazines, books, journals, reviews, and personal interviews.
