I'd like to get a laptop with good vertical resolution for productivity. But everything seems to be 1920x1080 these days. Does anyone know of a reputable maker who offiers 1920x1200 displays?

HP Elitebook 8740w but it's pretty expensive though. Beyond that, it's gonna be tough to find anything that isn't 16:9 resolution now since even the business notebooks are going in that direction. Might be able to find a refurb with that resolution as Chapbass said above in reference to the T61p.

8730w is a good candidate for refurb/used.

Myself - macbook 17" - beautiful screen - pretty cheap. it had a dent and apple replaced the logic board, screen (glossy to matte), upper case, lower case - gratis. 2.66 17" 8gb 320gb 7200rpm - i think it was $1100 used with 1.5 years applecare remaining.

you might say its expensive for used. but it had a warranty, and after the dent removal (seriously i think they took a refurb and swapped my drive over) - awesome-o deal. I usually just RDP in to windows machines so screen and key/trackpad over anything. the battery is not new but man it lasts like 6-7 hours at 50% brightness.

My 8730w is darker at 100% brightness no light sensor - than the macbook @ 50% brightness (no ambient) - how odd is that. i've had the 8730w screen replaced once already.

I'm in the same boat. I have a 4-year old 17" Dell with a 1920 x 1200 display and its fantastic, but getting a little old. I have looked for a 1920 x 1200 17" replacement laptop, with little luck. So far, it looks like the best option is a MacBook 17" - it really boggles my mind that Apple is the most cost effective option. I might just settle for a crap 1080P screen, but I hate the form factor and loss of vertical pixels.

8740W replaced 8730W. you can find both these days. one used obviously. but 3/3/3 warranty might give you coverage. i paid $1150 for my macbook 17" with matte screen 8gb 7200rpm 320gb with applecare
