i got the new WD120GB HD from dell, but i want all my files from the HD i using now! i know there is many HD copy software but non i found are for XP... even the damn WD don't support it

please help, tell me where i can find one!

The most recent version of Norton Ghost (7.5? not sure...) supports cloning of XP installations on NTFS partitions.

Yes but it does not support restoration of an image.

Dam Symantec has really pulled the wool over peoples eyes with Ghost 2002.

Get DriveImage.

Are you saying it will create the image but NOT restore it? I have the version that came with System Works 2002 and it created the image fine.

the Drive Image demo won't allow to copy hard drive.... any freeware out there?

I used Norton Ghost and did just what you are asking about. I cloned a SCSI 9.1gb NTFS drive onto a WD 120gb SE drive and it was fine. Or am I missing something here?

You cloned, you did not image.

Ghost can copy NTFS in its sector by sector mode. It cannot write directly to NTFS.
Drive Image can.
That means you could for example, put a new bigger drive in a computer and clone the old to the new. But if you wanted to later use the old drive as a backup drive by writing an image to it, you could not restore the image if you were using NTFS.

here is the big question guy's!

Yes he is, but who knew the question was really about freeware.

Many if not most people who buy Ghost or DriveImage for this purpose (cloning a new drive) will want to use it to image drives or partitions for backup in the future. My point is, if you're going to buy software, you might as well make the wise purchase decision and buy the one that will be useable in all instances in the future rather than the one with limited future useability in NTFS, which is what I did. I bought Ghost because of what Symantec said and what I was told in these forums only to get it home and find out it cannot write an image to NTFS. In my opinion, I got screwed. Symantec says "fully compatible with XP". It should say "fully compatible with XP if you do not transfer to NTFS".

Drive Image is very user friendly, and you can schedule regular images that run automatically. You can even boot custom virtual floppies with it.

Poked around the "Compuapps" page and found this:

"You can use the software without activating for 30 days. After 30 days the program will stop working. You have 30 days to register your product after installation"

Seems to indicate that it is fully functional during the tria period. I haven't used this app because I use, and am 1000000% satisfied with Drive Image 5.01.

FOUND ONE!!! it's Compuapps' DriveWizard... great software with 30 days full features trail... Now I had copy my old HD to the new ones

thanks for your help... but Drive Image really sucks! based on $$$
