I'm surprised I still remember this URL after a year but you could try http://www.mrwakeup.com/.

Not sure if it's still free or not, you may have to listen to 5 seconds of ads but it (used to be) free and worked great!

set your computer to dial your own phone number, and put it on a schedule as appropraite?

In a lot of phone systems, if you call yourself - it'll play some error message. But then as soon as you hang up the phone, it'll ring.
