polm, if you're trying to learn Cisco, you need to buy a Cisco router. Used 2500 series routers should be quite cheap these days (check EBay) and are a good starting point.
Cmetz do those 2500's come with the new ios. I've always heard that one wants the newest ios if not can it be upgraded to the new ios and how much does that cause. I basically was interested in setting up a cisco test lab. I do moonlight ing on the side I have know problem going into my clients offices and setting up servers and such I'm very week when it comes to networking. Lets say if a client just ordered a t1 I want to be able to go in there and configure a ciso router and get everything up and running. I also want some experience with vlans. Will the 2500 help me out or do I need antother router also I will be testing this on dsl here at home.
watts3000, 12.3 is on 2500. Some of the higher end feature images are probably too big to fit in the max RAM / flash of the 2500, but the stuff most important (core IOS, T1, IP routing, access-lists) is there.
stay tuned... gimme a few weeks... once i sort out these firewall issues and make sure everything is working right. i'll have a 5 router pod for public use.
