I want to try one out before I sink money into something that is pay-to-play. I have heard about a couple of free ones, but cannot find the Links anymore.

All the MMORPGS I'm aware of comes with a free month to try it with (or all the major ones anyway, AC (Asheron's Call), EQ (EverQuest), AO (Anarchy Online), I think UO (Ultima Online)).

There's the box price, and the games aren't playable offline, so you're still risking cash either way.

There's one, called Redmoon, that's free at the moment (beta of some sort), but it's EXTREMELY monotonous. http://www.redmoononline.com

EDIT: MMORPGs=Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games.

EverQuest regularly has 2000+ people on a server at a time, Asheron's Call is similar, Anarchy Online's goal is a world supporting 100k+ players.

I just bought Anarchy Online, so far I am not impressed, but its early days yet and I am still getting the hang of it.
It was $50, first month free and then $12 per month after that.

I recommend AC (Asheron's Call) because new stuff gets added every month and it's ever-evolving. Not to mention the expansion pack coming sometime near X-mas that should own :) AO would be good if you could play 10 mins w/o crashing .. it's horrible right now.

I've been playing AO since 3 or so days after release, and while it's buggy, it certainly has potential. The connection issues are getting better constantly, and it's rather fun so far anyway (I'm a level 8 nano technician (think Mage)). Once they get the remaining problems resolved, it's going to be interesting to see where the game goes.

But, honestly, I'd advise against buying it right now, unless you're willing to work through the problems. Give it a couple weeks :)
