Any good free games that don't require a beefy graphics card?

silly lifer, "software for windows" forum is for software for windows, PC gaming forum is for PC games

Edit: now for a quality post

are you talking about flash based games? or stuff that you DL and play for free?

World of Padman is a pretty cool free FPS based on Quake 3 source (standalone game, doesn't require Q3). Aimed at kids of all ages it's a very colorful game, no gore, with very detailed and polished maps.

System requirements: 1Ghz Processor, 512MB RAM, 600MB Hard Disk Space, 128MB OpenGL Video Card

AnonymouseUser and I have played it together. Its fun, whacky, interesting weapons, very detailed maps, very polished indeed. For a free game, can't go wrong. Has its own in game music box, rather cool to use. Highly recommend it.

Includes:

  • * Baldur's Gate DVD
    * Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast (expansion pack) CD
    * Baldur's Gate 2 DVD
    * Baldur's Gate 2: Throne of Bhaal (expansion pack) CD
    * IceWind Dale DVD
    * IceWind Dale: Heart of Winter (expansion pack) CD
    * IceWind Dale 2: 2 CDs
    * NeverWinter Nights: 3 CDs
    * NeverWinter Nights: Shadows of UnderTide (expansion pack) CD
    * NeverWinter Nights: Hordes of the UnderDark (expansion pack) CD

How often do you think you suggest this collection? 😀 And let me second probably the greatest (it's up there!) collection of games (RPGs) of all time.

I hate to tell you this buddy, but I just did a clean install of XP Pro SP2 and I cant run Icewind Dale anymore. It crashes no matter what I do and there arent any more patches for it. Strange that my old install with many years of updated drivers and several versions of Direct X could play it fine.
Havent tried either of the Baldurs Gates yet, I hope they arent lost to me forever.
If I absolutely have to I may just make myself a Win98 machine, for legacy purposes. Probably put a GeForce 3 in it, with a Socket A motherboard.

GameTap.com is close to free at $10/month or $60/year, and they have Fallout, Jagged Alliance 2, Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, etc. plus some newer games that might still work on a low end card.

Did you install the expansion pack + the free expansion pack for the expansion pack (it includes the latest patches)? IceWind Dale with those two things worked fine on my XP SP2 install.

I installed the retail expansion and the extra expansion.
No dice. I think it must be something with Windows. Before I just had the main game installed and it ran fine. Then when I installed the retail expansion it was running fine too.

Just a bump for World of Padman. Thanks for the link. I downloaded it tonight, and I've been playing a bit against bots. It's a very fun, silly game. Definitely worth the download :thumbsup:

Hey thats cool lxskllr. It really is a fun game. Quirky fun, I like the way the bots talk to you, and make comments. "Ohhh, it's just not my day." The maps are very well done, so much detail and time put into them, lots of thought put into the maps. Love the weapons, they are hilarious, I like the Betty, and Balloony. Balloony cracks me up the way it shoots the water blows and they bop all over the place going after your opponent. Have you tried out the killer ducks yet? Hate those things! 😛

There is a weapon called the Imperius, this weapon is well hidden in the maps, you have to play the maps a bit to find them. The weapon is close to the Ion Painter in UT. Glad you like it.

Did you change the compatibility mode to W2k or W98?

I did ALL that stuff.
I went into the game config and set every graphics option to minimum, turned off sound, everything I could think of.
I used the Task Manager to set the game to run on only one core, but everything I try fails.
The sad thing is I have the exact same hardware. All I did was reinstall my OS after getting a new hard drive. Before and after, both times it was WIN XP PRO with SP2 and Direct X 9.0c. Same video and sound drivers too.

Other than gremlins I cant figure out what might be wrong with my computer. And it sucks because I was just about to get into Icewind Dale for the first time ever. Before I had only started games and couldnt enjoy them because of the locked resolution. With the DVD Edition and expansion that was no longer going to be an issue.

Eschalon isn't free, but it doesn't require a good graphics card
Nethack is free and good
Dwarf Fortress is free and good
Mount and Blade has a decent trial version I believe

You should also take Dave Simmons advice and check out Gametap. You can play a number of games without even signing up.

I bought Mount and Blade for 15 bucks a year back. Good fun.
