Any good free editors for h.264 video in mkv containers?

VirtualDub doesn't read them. VirtualDubMod will open them but spits out tons of errors and can't do much with them. I'm not looking to do anything space age, just splitting and joining for the most part.

i found mkv2vob, its small and fast. Only thing, it's single threaded so for larger files it doesn't work so well.

With the lack of further information on what you need, I'd recommend looking at mkvtoolnix. That should at least give you a pretty good start on working with the mkv files.
