i don't get how CoD isn't like those games? You run around in circles on the map shooting people. the only thing different is it's modern day weapons and there's no health/weapon/item pickups.
To sum it up as much as I can, every feature within COD's multiplayer is designed to even the playing field so everyone will feel like a winner. Old school arena shooters are designed so player skill alone will always win. I've played matches in Quake where I shut out guys 20 kills to nothing, and I've been on the receiving end of it as well, and often our skill levels were very close. However, since there is no silly unlocks or game given advantages, the more skilled player will almost always win, no matter how tiny the skill difference is.

OP: Unfortunately that game style is mostly gone nowadays. What's "in" now is how much XP you got the previous round and what perks you've unlocked. Exciting stuff I know. Stick with Quakelive, because that's about as good as it gets right now.

I don't know anyone who plays any of those games you listed. I can't imagine that there's even a noticeable fraction of people who play those games compared to the old Quakes and Unreals.

So by your logic, "I don't know anyone who plays those games" = No one plays them? Maybe you should get some friends who have a more varied taste in shooters?

There's a sufficient number of players in all those games, even if there's not many. Last summer when I was hooked on Nexuiz, there were probably only two or three full servers at any given time, but that was still enough to play. Not "popular" by any means, the community still exists.

You really don't need ~50,000 concurrent players to consider a game to be active.

I am of the opinion Far Cry was the last good FPS. After that the only thing I liked was remakes of older games, like Serious Sam HD and, lets see, what else........

CoD is pretty much entirely hitscan weapons, but in Quake/Unreal the weapons are much more varied. CoD maps are mostly on one level, whereas Quake/Unreal maps are more vertical. With most CoD guns you can kill someone very easily and quickly from any range, which means you have to play slower and more cautiously.

They play so differently I don't see how you can say they're similar having played both.
