I was wondering if there are any decent shootem up flight sims anymore. I'm not talking about real aircraft, I mean like the old days of Decent III, Terminal Velocity, HellBender, those kind of shootem up games. It seems like the world is focused on FPS's these days, and I haven't hear if any good ones have been released lately. Anyone know of/play any good modern ones?

Freespace was the last good space sim. I liked X-wing vs Tie Fighter too.

I downloaded the demo of Freelancer, it was pretty fun, not enough to make me want to go purchase teh whole game though. I wish there were a similar game that could actually tax my x800XL card with a little DX9 eye candy.

Closest you'd get is X3: Reunion....

but if it follows on from X2: The Threat, its not very combat orientated and its combat engine is poor.

I know you said no real aircraft, but Heroes of the Pacific is a great arcade-like flight sim. It's set in WWII, but the game mechanics are far from realistic. You have unlimited ammo and a swarm of enemies on each level, so there's always stuff blowing up :)

It has online play too.

If you want a cheap fix, I picked up a brand new in the box copy of Starlancer at EB recently for $1.99 :)
