You must have meant to say the following:
"Before my brother goes back to his home, I would like to make a "backup" copy of his Pirates of the Carribean DVD in the event he scratches the original disc. Should he scratch his original disc, I can safely pull out the backup copy that we made at Christmas time and I can mail it to him so he can enjoy the movie."
With that being said, DVDShrink does a great job of making backup copies of DVDs. You can then use Nero or CloneDVD to apply the backed up copy of the movie to a 4.7GB DVD disc.
