NV doesn't allow lateral transfers so I'd have to go through the entire academy again. And the desert is too brown and boring. :p New Mexico and Utah are too far away from anything interesting. I like AZ because I have friends there and it's a fairly short drive to Vegas and CA.

There are definitely openings every now and again, but I can't keep flying out there to test.

Here in Vegas, METRO, NLVPD & Henderson PD have all laid staff this year.

Make more sense to look for open full time PD positions in what area..? I'd take anywhere in the east valley, but I'm not going to pay to fly out there to test for a place that has only one opening. If I lived out there, it'd be different.

Border Patrol could be an option, though they seem to get shot at quite often. That would suck.

From my extensive experience of watching Border Wars, it seems like job is mostly chasing down mexican nationals on 4 wheelers... could be fun.

The down side is you're usually living in some crappy town on the border....or worse, manning a checkpoint as your duties.

One thing to consider in regards to Maricopa County Sheriff's dept. is that you'll be throwing in with Sheriff Joe, and if there is any justice in this world he's headed for an epic collapse.

Utah has several awesome areas for outdoor recreation, if that's your thing. You ever driven though? There are some really upscale (albeit smallish) cities in Utah. e.g. Ogden

Might want to also consider some of the states that are currently experiencing a stronger-than-average (nationally) economy from things like oil or gas production; Montana, Wyoming, and North and South Dakota.

I have zero interest in living in another frozen wasteland. If I wanted to do that, I'd keep my job and stay where I am. :p

I haven't been to Utah, though. It seems to be a beautiful area, but I really have my heart set on Arizona and have for a few years.

You should spend at least a few days visiting Utah. I don't know what your attraction is to Arizona but if its the Southwestern geology/landscape, there is a lot of that Southwestern landscape in Utah, such as gorges, desert, bluffs, buttes, mesas, canyons, some wilderness. Of course, there are some huge parts of the state where its just "bleh" (uninhabitable) for hours in every direction, but Arizona has lots of that, too.

I appreciate the concern, but I'm pretty set on AZ. If I really don't like it, I can move later - I'm not old yet. :p
