wtf do you DO to these things? My laptop has been through HELL, and looks like it - but still runs like the day it was built.

I don't know what I do. I am very careful with my stuff, I really am. I take my lappy to school in a backpack designed specifically for laptops on average 3 times a week, and when I'm at home it sits on a laptop cooler. It is cosmetically in like new condition, and I take excellent care of it as far as software, etc. NIS 2005, Ad-Aware, Win Defender, keep it defragged, etc. My current career is cleaning PCs and end-user support, so I know how to keep it healthy. Other than this screen issue, it's a great system.

You ought to get a better Antivirus/firewall program...

I find it amusing how you guys b1tch and moan about how your laptops keep failing yet do nothing about it, maybe you should learn a little and ACTUALLY buy a decent laptop for once..

Yeah yeah, I know, but it works and I haven't had a single adware/malware/virus/trojan/anything come through in the 1.5 years I've used it. I hardly ever have to touch it, which is important to me. I shouldn't have to babysit my AV/firewall.

I got really tired of updating and maintaining Zonealarm, AVG, adaware, spybot, MS antispyware, all of that.

My girlfriend bought an HP laptop from BB about 2.5 years ago.

Repair 1 and 2
Keyboard was going bad, so it was sent in for service. When she finally got it back, (3 weeks later), the work order said that the keyboard was replaced...well it was obviously the same keyboard because the same keys were worn as before...so they sent it back again. The GS guy at the time told us that it was a good thing because it counted as 2 repairs toward the no lemon policy.

Repair 3
Laptop was constantly overheating. The fans would run at full speed at all times, and would reboot ocassionally. They sent it in, and came back saying they "dusted it out and 'replaced PC cable' (wtf?)" - Laptop still does this btw.

Repair 4
The AC adapter plug was not charging the laptop anymore...you had to hold it a certain way to get it to power the laptop. We took it in assuming since this was repair #4, she could get a new laptop.

Well, they said:
1) Only repair 1-2 counted towards the no lemon.
2) Repair 3 might not count
3) THe current problem didnt count, because it was a consumable....he basically diagnosed it on the spot saying that its very common for the plug on the motherboard to come loose and need to be resoldered.

I asked him what would "count" and he said, "Motherboard going out for no reason....CD-ROM going out for no reason"....

The dumbest part is that they send the laptop in to their "service center' to make the diagnosis and repairs....so even if it was that the laptop just crapped out, how would we ever know...they could just claim that the connector came loose...

Toshiba is known to be a very reliable brand, maybe the best besides IMB/lenovo.

I know how to fix most of these problems, I just prefer not to void my $350 warranty. I could have paid $300 to get a DVD drive from a different manufacturer, but didn't feel like spending it since it was covered. I could fix these screen's wires, but it would void my 2 years of warranty that's left.

I do research these things before buying.

Yup, I see ignorance is bliss in this case.. Lets just say when I had Norton, the machine had viruses that norton never detected but I knew were there due to them being in MSCONFIG... If you really haven't encountered a virus in 1.5 years, then you mind as well uninstall it because norton is as good as nothing, I'm dead serious. (I never used AVG, I use Kaspersky, which has the highest detection rate).

Bold: Maybe in 1993.. They use to make excellent laptops back in the old days but every MODERN toshiba I've encountered has been utter garbage. You shouldn't be having to fix any of these things with your laptop, replacing the drive, monitor problems etc.. These are just signs of shoddy workmanship/poor design. Look on ebay for IBM laptop from the early 90s, most of them are in fairly good cosmetic and working condition..

I've tried to be loud. I snail mailed corporate and got back a generic 'we don't care about your problem' letter. I've talked to all 3 managers in the building the 5th time I had a repair done, one of them the store manager. They didn't care, they just wanted me out the door.

I'm not a very loud person by nature, I worked in retail for 1.5 years as a sort of supervisor and was always more willing to work with a quiet and professional customer than an obnoxious one.

call 1-888-Best-Buy, gotta go above the managers heads if you don't get what you want. and then try a different store, mail isn't gonna do a thing.

As I mentioned before, my career is keeping PCs clean of adware and viruses, among other responsibilities. I know how to keep my startup processes clean and monitor this kind of stuff. There are no viruses on my system and the firewall does an excellent job, I know that for a fact. I customized the firewall settings myself and shut off the ports I don't use.
