Any gearheads here who could help me out?

GF recently took title of an 89 blazer from her family. The price was right - free - so we couldn't turn it down as we needed a second ride. We knew it had some minor problems but there was nothing serious.

However, after filling up the tank the other day, GF continued to smell gasoline after driving around. After we moved it yesterday, we noticed a big stain on the driveway. I smelled it, and sure enough, it smelled like gasoline. I looked undernearth the car, right behind the rear tires , and saw this, where the gas appears to be coming from.. Now, there are several other circular "holes" (look like drainage holes) in this thing (look closely at 2nd picture to see more), but the one at the right rear of the car is where the gas seems to be coming from.

My guess, as a non car-guy, was that this thing is a gas tank shield, and the gas tank is leaking from inside of it, and coming out these drainage holes. I might be way off, I don't know. Please help...yes, I will be taking it to a mechanic, but I'd like to see if anyone can tell what the problem might be before that. Thanks guys!

I have a full size 89 blazer, and it has a 'skid plate' that covers the bottom of the tank, to protect it. It also is a great place for salt an debris to accumulate and accelerate the corrosion process. I think that your supposition is a correct one.

got 2 people who think my prediction is correct. Any more?

How much am I looking at for a new tank, labor and materials?

this sucks! we just got the title yesterday in the mail, I've had it for a WEEK!!!!

You got what you payed for. Relax, pull the cover off, and make sure its just not a hose leaking. Used tanks at the junk yard are cheap and fairly easy to replace. Just run it until your almost empty before dropping the tank to make it easier/lighter. They make an epoxy that you can temporarily use to plug any hole(s) you have.
