I may just be slow, but when I downloaded and installed and signed up to play Gunbound, I couldn't even figure out how to play. I joined a game, and just sat there clicking and pressing buttons, but had no idea what I was doing. The game is not intuitive at all (and I've played every versions of Worms since they started making them) and I could never find a "How to play" manual on the site.
It's developed by Koreans who have a minimal grasp of English. (
and Engrish for that matter) However, the instructions are fairly simple, so lemme lay 'em on you:
Cliff Notes:
Tab - change between weapons (
1, 2, SS)
Each weapon has different max/min angles
Higher weapons make your turns less frequent
So does using items and taking long turns
Hold down space and release to fire
Up and down change angle
Left and right move you
Use items by pressing F1 through F6
Full explanation:
Basics
When you start the game you'll notice you have three little tabs in the lower left: 1, 2, and SS. (
looks kinda like "55") These are the three weapons the bot you're using has; you change between them by pressing the Tab key. In general, 1 is less powerful, 2 is more powerful, and SS -- Super Special I guess -- is the most powerful. So why not use 2 or SS all the time? First off, SS can only be used once every number of turns. But secondly, the higher-powered weapons add more wait time between turns.
If you look at the listing of names you'll notice a number next to each one. At the beginning of the match they'll all say "+0"; this number signifies the "turn ranking" of each player compared to you, lower numbers going first. This number is calculated each turn by the weapon the player uses, how long they took to fire (
or pass their turn) and any items they used that turn. While the precise point value of the weapons varies from bot to bot, the game adds 10 points for every second a turn takes, and the point value of the items is listed in the lobby, where you pick them out. (
e.g. Dual is +600 I think)
Okay, so use lower-powered weapons, take less time each turn, don't use any items, and your turns will come more often. See? Not that difficult to understand.
Firing (a.k.a. Killing the Other Guy)
Assuming you're using the default settings it's pretty easy to shoot. (
Being accurate, that's the hard part) Overlayed on your bot you'll see a shaded circle with some hash marks, shaded green areas and a red needle. The needle indicates your firing angle, which is displayed numerically below the number
and in a small box next to the weapon section of the HUD. The green areas indicate the range of angles at which you can fire the weapon you have selected. (
This changes from weapon to weapon, bot to bot, so be careful) The lighter green areas indicate less damage is done at those angles. You can change your angle at any time by using the up and down arrow keys.
During your turn you'll be able to move by using the right and left arrow keys. Some bots can move great distances, while some are limited. Unlike Worms, there is no jump key; if you run into something you can't get over you'll either have to blow it up or use a Teleport (
an item) to get around it, both of which will end your turn.
Firing with the default settings is easy: hold down the Space Bar until the red power meter goes as high as you want it. In Slice mode your power bar will fill in specific incriments(sp?), making it relatively easy to achieve the same shot from turn to turn. You could also try using Sniper mode, which is the same as Slice but without the set incriments. (
Though I rarely find that level of precision is needed) Drag mode is a little more complex, involving the mouse, so I'll leave it for now.
If you're holding space and nothing's happening you may have accidentally started typing something. I think if you hit escape a few times it'll clear the text box, but I can't remember for sure.
Using Items
This apparently escapes some people. When you select your items in the lobby they'll line up in a small bar. If you look closely you'll notice that the far left has "F1" above it, and the far right has "F6". Each of the six slots corresponds to an F-key, starting with the left at F1 and ending at F6. Just press the corresponding key to use the item. (
For two-slot items you can press either button)
There, congrats, more than you ever wanted to know about Gunbound. That should get you going.
EDIT: Gonna try to make Cliff Notes...
