I'm the same as Patt, but both mine & my wife's families have French Canadian background. I don't speak it very well 😛

^I'm with stupid. 😀

French Canadian ancestry, but I am removed from it. It's not like I'm going to call myself a FrenchCanadian-American. 😉

That actually makes me wonder...is the French spoken by French-Canadians different from that spoken by European French? Sort of like how Creole down here in Louisiana is far different from the parent language, but still somewhat recognizable.

I've visited Quebec several times and I've met many Quebequois. I have drank beer with them and discussed political issues.

I've also listenened to a recording of a Montreal disc jockey impersonating the prime minister of Canada. He phoned Bill Gates as the PM and asked Bill to come visit him so they could get together and among other things, go to strip clubs. It's amazing how easily he got through to Gates.

Proud French-Canadian here. Lived my first 23 years in Québec City Saint Jean-Baptiste parish (uppertown, of course). Went to Collège Des Jésuites (now Saint Charles- Garnier) Been in Ottawa since 1989. Both paternal and maternal ancestors got to Québec City around 1630-1655.

Yes it is. My brother goes to the military college in Ontario and you have to speak both french and english by the time you graduate. Some of them went to France to do a battlefield tour and some of the francophones with them (ie native french speakers) were told that their french was terrible.

Spent 3 years in Montreal as a young teenager (went to Selwyn House). When I left I was bilingual, but haven't used it much in the last 20 years and have lost it.

Yes it is. The differences in the language aren't substanstial but accents are different and each side can have trouble understanding each other.
