I am looking for a freeware .mpeg editor for simple tasks, such as cut and join. Being able to handle VBR mpeg and add a soundtrack would also be nice. Virtual Dub does what I want and accepts .mpeg files as input, but only outputs as .avi. I want something that can output .mpeg/.mpg files.

I got Cyberlink Power Producer with my DVD burner and it can process .mpeg files if I choose to Make a VCD or SVCD. However, it can't save modified .mpeg files, only burn them directly to a CD in the VCD or SVCD format. All I want to do is to save the edited .mpeg file on my HD for later use.

Suggestions?

Thanks

Edit: I could also live with a low-restriction shareware, such as only a nag screen.

Not sure you will find too many free mpeg2 editors, as it costs money to license the codec. MPEGStreamclip works well on a Mac, so hopefully it does on windows as well, but you need QT or QT alternative.

Thanks guys. Mostly, I am looking for a mpeg1 editor, Although I will gladly accept mpeg2 editing if provided.

--- I am going to give a whirl to MpegStreamClip. It's a new app, but it could do the job if it is stable enough

--- VirtualDub can't save as mpeg. I already use it for AVI files.

---TMPGEnc MPEG Editor looks nice but is only a trial...48$ US tu buy

MPEGClipStream gets some props from other editors and it will handle HDV streams. So, can't go too wrong with it for free.

Yes, the more I read the documentation, the more interesting it seems. The Mac OS X version is even recommended on the Apple website, so it looks like a credible product.

Can't wait to get home to try it :clock:

Well I have tried it and it works well to edit start and end of clips,

My problem is that I am unable to find the way to join a series of clips in the order I want. Somehow, I think it involves using the Copy/Paste command. All I am getting is the clips in inverse order of what I want or multiple instances of the same clip. The logic of the joining process with this app escapes me, despite spending an hour experimenting with it

The documentation deals mostly with advanced settings, as if it is obvious how to join clips...Well...not for me.

So if anyone can help me with this, I would appreciate it.

Finally. I figured how to join files...

Open File#1, select Copy, close the file.
Open File#2, select Paste
File #1 is copied before the start of file#2
Save joined file with "Save as" command

Knowing this, a bit of planning is required to join multiple files. It is better to put a number in the file name to be certain of joining files in the proper sequence.
