any free software to reduce volume levels in multiple wave files?

I'd like to change the volume levels in some wave files because they are too loud... is there any free software that can do this and batch process multiple files?

There is plenty of software which will do what you want. Do a google search for batch+normalize+wav
Troll through and find something which suits your OS and budget.
