You do not have to register. It'll just nag you every time you use it, but the program is still fully functional.

i switched to it from a registered version of winzip 9

The 7zip rocks! But don't forget to set your file associations after you install it. At default it does not associate archives to the program.

I just click once every time to get by WinRar's nag message. It's not too annoying, Winzip's is much more annoying since they move the buttons around.

ZipGenius seems like a nice program.

Yes it is,I`m using it and find it has a professional look with a normal and expert interface layout, it even gives you tips ,just amazing for a free zip/unzip program .

Anyone gone through and checked the compression ratios of the various programs? For example, take a 20mb text file and see how far down in can compress.

I used 7-zip before I gave in and registered WinRar - as much as I've used it over the years, they finally deserved my money . . .

I use ALZIP. Unlimited shareware license.

ed: adding supported file formats:

Open and extract 30 different file formats including 00x, ACE, ALZ, ARC, ARJ, B64, BH, BHX, BZ2, CAB, EAR, ENC, GZ, HA, HQX, ICE, JAR, LHA, LZH, MIM, PAK, RAR, TAR, TGZ, UUE, WAR, XXE, Z, ZIP, and ZOO files too! No other archiving utility beats ALZip. Not WinZip. Not WinRAR. Not WinACE. Nothing. ALZip is the Winner hands down!
