any forum software suitable for design and development discussions

Is there any forum software suitable for engineering design and development discussions as an alternative to email. Suppose you have a number of projects and within each project you have a number of categories e.g. bugs, spec, design, manuals. Each person needs to be able to select which projects show up for them - so you might have a top level of
announcements
procedures
projects
general

When you post a topic you might want to be able to select who gets notified, or perhaps everyone on a project team gets notified of every post to that project.

Any suggestions of forum software that might be suitable?

I think most of them can do all that (different areas/groups/permissions/notifications/etc.) ?

Wordpress has a really nice plugin called "BuddyPress" that is like a mini social network for your site. It has all kinds of functionality for large teams collaborating on things, and it's super easy to use. As a plus, it has full integration with "BBPress", which is a popular forum plugin for Wordpress.

I've been using this for well over a year now.
