are there? i know Red Hat [now Fedora] supports it in 2D mode only [just horrible for playing quake 3!]

so, do any of them support the 9700 Pro out of the box?

Probably not. You can go to ATI's website, download the binary drivers and try to get those working. Since these are closed sourced drivers distro's are pobably not allowed by ATI to ship the drivers with the OS's.

If anyone has gotten those drivers working successfully please tell me how. I'm running a Debian derivative (see my sig)...

I have gotten them to work.

I just downloaded the drivers off ATI's website.

The file came as an RPM. And you had to force the installation of the rpm because it conflicted with
the GL from Mesa. But ATI tells you, you may have to do that. You should test it before to make
sure there are no other conflicts and just the GL one.

They have drivers for 4.1 - 4.3.
After the installation you have to call, fglrxconfig which I think is ATI configuartion for the XF86-Config file.
I'd backup the old config files, just in case. You can always boot up with X and fix the problem.
I also used my old config files to make sure I had the correct settings, like refresh rates. Things
you might not know off the top of your head.

I am using Fedora so my XFree is version 4.3. However using Redhat 8.0 awhile back, I had 4.2 working
to.

Hope this helps.

Well, this saved me a post.
I just installed Suse 9 Pro & it informed me that 3D acceleration was unavailable. It also initially recognized my card as an 8500.
I'll download the driver & give 'er a try.

i'm using kernel 2.6 and portage, and the ati binary drivers (3.2.8) installed perfectly for me. just emerge ati-drivers, and run "/opt/ati/bin/fglrxconfig" if you don't have a XF86Config-4.

portage makes things easy
