For father's day I'd like to get my dad a pair of hip waders, since he's fishing a lot more lately and has been ruining his sneakers wading in.
What I'd like to know is:
1) What's a good, quality brand (if any)
2) What specs, (if any), should I look for in them. The descriptions I've seen list like semi hard toecaps, knee harnesses, etc etc., and that's just confusing.
3) How much would I be looking at spending. I don't need top of the line, but I don't want to be cheap and buy him the base model.

Any info on this would be great. Thanks in advance!

Get Neoperine waders. They sell them at Academy if you have those stores, but I'm sure you can find them somewhere or Red Ball waders are good too but Neoperine (misspelled probably) are the best IMHO.

You may want to take him personally to a fisherman's supply store, and let him try them on before buying. I know it's a gift for him, but due to a wide variety of manufacturers, i wouldn't recommend just picking up any generic size.

La Crosse Footwear makes good stuff. At least they used to, they shut down their plant in La Crosse and make em overseas now. You do not need to spend more than $100 bucks on a good pair of hip waiders. There really aren't any specs or anything taht I know up, just get a good pair that you think will fit.

hell, now that I see em, the Yellowstones for 45 bucks would probably work great, and not be too heavy.

Is he fishing in cold water or warm water? The reason I ask is that if you are fishing in warm water in the summer, neopreine waders will get really hot. I would go with a standard rubber hipwader with built in boot and knee straps. The knee straps are important to help keep the hip wader on. Something a lot like what AarronP posted is what I'm talking about. You should be able to find these at Wal-Mart.

Another (more expensive) option would be to get gortex hip waders and buy boots with them. This option is better quality, but definitely more expensive.
