Thinking of getting my wife the Canon Powershot SX110IS for Christmas. We have an older Powershot now and she loves the small size and large LCD, for her it's a perfect camera. The screen is starting to die on it (chunks of pixels are going grey, about 1 chunk/month now) so it's time for a new one.
Anyway, the only thing I don't like about it is the dark indoor shots. I understand that P&S cameras are that way, but I'm thinking the pop-up flash on the SX110IS will help? Maybe? The wife doesn't even notice them so it's not a big deal, just wondering if there's another P&S that has better indoor quality for the same price ($200).

That camera should do quite nicely for the intended use. The pop-up flash works just fine as long as your flash shots are within the range of the flash - i.e., within about 16 feet or 3 meters.

No flash will do any good when it is used at rediculous distances between camera and subject. Example - notice all the flashes going off in a stadium at night where people are shooting things hundreds of feet away. The flashes should be turned off so that the auto exposure will use available light.

i'd pick the tz4/5 from panasonic over the plastic sx110is

indoor flash comparison

both are pretty decent at indoor flash. the tz series lens goes wider than the sx110is lens, which is a good thing in cramped quarters.

I went ahead and purchased the tz4. Comparing the shots side by side was rather shocking, it seemed the tz4/5 takes much more crisp indoor shots. Plus it was $17 cheaper and looks much more durable.

Thanks for the recommendation. If the wife doesn't like it I'll tell her it's your fault ;) I'll be able to compare the cameras hands on too, a friend just picked up the sx110is for his wife :)
