What kind of proxy? Are you talking about the software or an actualy host that you can leech through?

* of course we're both being sarcastic, but my way would let you leech in parallel, giving a much higher transfer rate than hacking just one person

The top reasons are usually:
spam
cracking (everything from compromising computers to getting around the work firewall to download pr0n)
DoS
kiddie pr0n (trying to hide your originating ip address)
