I would like to get some history books for Christmas, along with my usual plethora of novels.

I like writing that isn't formulaic and where the author doesn't take it too seriously. I am interested in some books on the medieval period and serfdom, along with Norse mythology and the chronicles of celebrated knights (Arthur, Charlemagne, etc.).
