Any extreme newbie Linux tutorials?

I've searched around for stuff like this in the past and never come up with anything good to really help me with the command line, and just general stuff...

I've installed Mandrake 9.x in the past, and one of the later distros of Red Hat, and I just can't seem to get anywhere with them once I get the OS installed and everything setup.

I downloaded GAIM, and couldn't get ANYWHERE with it...no freakin clue what I was doin! 😱 😕

So yeah, if anyone knows of anything that's super basic and could link me to it I'd appreciate it!

Thanks 🙂

-Ben-

Edit: And I'm maybe thinking of downloading Debian since it seemed to be the most favored in the Poll that came up when I searched...😕

No matter what you choose to install you'll have to start reading something, the README that came with GAIM would have probably been a good place to start.

If you're really interested in Debian, which might not be the best choice since you're pretty inexperienced, you should start reading at http://www.debian.org/doc/.

Try installing Gentoo from stage 1 while following the install guide word for word. It's rigid enough to keep you out of trouble, but it has enough wiggle room for you to learn something. 😉

GAIM should have just come with your distro. No need to download it. Get to a terminal window (if you dont know what this is, look through the sprograms menu for it) and type gaim <enter>.

All linux programs can be started from the command line. This is the preferred method.
