I have a 30" HP LP3065 purchased in 2009 which is outside of warranty. It has recently developed a problem where the lower 10% of the screen (e.g. Windows taskbar and a bit above it) flickers/tears.

At first it was intermittent but now it happens regularly and constantly once it’s been switched on for a while. Turning it off makes the problem temporarily go away, so I’m thinking it’s a bad contact somewhere.

I’ve concluded it’s the display part of the monitor by trying:

  • Both DVI ports on my Titan.
  • A different DVI cable.
  • All three DVI ports on the LCD.
  • Sitting in the EFI screen.
  • Using Intel on-board.
  • Trying different resolutions to 2560x1600.
In all, cases the problem eventually re-appears.

Is this a common fault in LCDs? If so, does anyone have any idea about the typical complexity (and cost) about repairing something like this?

The display is fantastic and I’d really like to keep it if possible. But if the repair cost is too high, it would be better just to get a brand new 1080p 144 Hz monitor and wait to see how the 4K situation pans out.

Open the monitor check the CAPS on the PSU, usually built in(I don't have an HP)so I'm not sure. Check all ribbon cables for good seating, etc. Sometimes just re seating connecters will work or help, but it sounds like its just getting old......

That is a problem with the screen itself. Sometimes you can get lucky and it's a connection to the screen from the T-con board like in one of the video's in SOFTengCOMPelec's link.
