So my need is for a small low power device to give me RAID1 in order that i remove that requirement from my main machine.
I am, for all intents and purposes, broke, so i'm trying to keep this cheaper (aren't we all?)
I do have a couple of drives i can use, but they're only 250GB, so i will look to upgrade the unit in the future.
Hot-swapping is not a requirement, it's nice, but i can't find it on a cheaper unit, it's for home and has no time criticality on replacements.

$200 is about as much as i can swing for this, even without drives, whilst a unit with a couple of TB drives would be great, my current reason for looking at this one, is the software.
* I don't know how this unit handles a drive failure.
* I don't know how this unit handles a unit failure, can i read/recover the drive contents without it?
Speed is nice to have, but backup's aren't really a factor nor is huge data amounts, i just want the RAID functionality/requirement off my system.
So, with all that said, does anyone have this unit, experience of this unit or a better suggestion for around the same price/cheaper, whilst retaining features and operability?
Thanks.
*EDIT - I should also mention i was looking at this unit too http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822319019 - But have even less confidence in it Vs a big name like Synology.
