Any experience with shopping from Crutchfield?

I'm thinking of purchasing a cd player for my car from Crutchfield. I know they are a bit more expensive, but with detailed instructions on how to install it myself, and all the guarantees they provide, it seems like a decent investment. After chatting online with a Crutchfield agent, it looks like I will get the installation instructions, wiring harness, and antenna adapter all for free, and I also get a 50% discount on a Metra adapter I will need if I want to keep all the warning chimes on my Pontiac.

I guess what I'm asking, is for those who have shopped there for what I'm shopping for, how was everything? How were the instructions? If you had no idea what you were doing going in to a receiver installation into your vehicle, how did you fare with the installation?

Thanks.

I got my car speakers there when they 'on sale'. They reply to tech support questions in less than an hour usually.

As for the detailed instructions, they aren't that great. They're actually more generic than anything. It's just a printout and not very detailed with pictures or anything.

You're better off finding a website that is devoted to installing cd players for your own car. I found a site like that for my civic, but it was insanely complicated on a 2000 civic. In the end, i prob could've installed it myself but it would take way too much work and i always had the chance of scratching up the inside of my car.

I got a radio and wiring harness from them. It all worked great. Just make sure you're good at splicing wires together. :)

Oh yeah.. You gotta get a crimper to actually attach the harness to the back of the cd player.
Another reason I dind't do it myself.

Their prices are higher than most places, but their customer service is second to none.

I love Crutchfield, and I think their prices, at least on my last two purchases, were surprisingly competitive.

they should offer good service, they charge full retail on everything. I think we've discussed this before on ATOT. hehe

Years ago, I spent over $5000 at Crutchfield. I had not one regret and the customer service was out-fvcking-standing:D:D

I use wire nuts. Like two bucks for a big pack. Strip the wires, insert in cap, twist. Easy :D

Yes, Crutchfield is pricey, but they give instructions, a wiring harness, and the dash kit, plus tech support. I think it's worth the extra in most cases.

KAYMIN is an obvious problem user.

I buy when it's convenient....maybe 2-3 deckes and about 5-8 sets of speakers.

never a problem.

Not really. Every purchase I've made has been pretty comparable to a purchase made elsewhere when you factor in costs for harnesses, wires, tax, shipping, etc. Usually, by that point, Crutchfield is only $5 or $10 more. With my last purchase, a pair of Pioneer speakers, Crutchfield had the LOWEST price out of the 3 or 4 places I normally check (cardomain, etronics, nextag)

Everyone always talks about their great customer service, and here's an example why it rocks:

Bought a pair of speakers, didn't like it, got an RMA (free return shipping) 30 days after my purchase. Saw a new pair of speakers I liked there. Crutchfield gave me free shipping (since I already paid for shipping on the purchase I was RMAing), took $10 off (coupon I used previously) and shipped the item the SAME day I called in. Swapped speakers 2 days later and sent back old speakers.

Edit: Oh, and their phone/order system is badass. I was in the trunk of my car calling them with my cordless phone, lying on my back (speaker installation) and the guy started telling me what to look for. I was like "WTF? I didn't even give you my order number" and he responded that they can pull up my order based on my phone number I'm calling from. :)

Generally I dont buy from them because they are higher priced on things like car CD players, however I ended up getting one for my dad's truck there simply because it came with the wire harness and dash kit required and it was all included. Shipping was fast, I just did it all online because I knew what I was looking for. I would definitely recommend them to someone who needs a little help with this sort of project.

Crutchfield is overpriced, but you definetely get what you pay for. Their service and shipping are top notch, and if you ever have a problem with your item it is easy to deal with their return department.
