I am currently paying $39.99 for DirecTV's standard package. I was just wondering if anyone had success in receiving maybe some free movie channels or some kind of lower price if I threatened to cancel and switch to cable. Any experiences?

Yes...I do it every year. Call them and tell them you are tempted to swtich to Dish Network and want to know if they have any incentive to keep you with them...so far I have gotten:

Free tivo
$200 credit
Free HD channels
Free local channels
Free new 3lnb dish
free installation & multiswitch

granted it probably helps that I have every channel and option available from them (minus playboy etc), so they probably want to keep me around...

Just see what they can do, and don't be a d!ck..

Dan

edit: you probably have more bargaining power if you know current deals dish and others are offering...honestly, you should anyway. I usually try and find good deals in case I feel like switching, and sometimes I do, but directv usually wins me back with the retention department...

The most important thing to remember is that in order to get free stuff, you have to be out of your initial year contract with no more than 1 (maybe 2) late payments. You also have to be willing to sign up for another year contract in order to get free stuff. I've read many times about customers just calling and asking for customer retention right off the bat to see what they can get. Typically, if you hold out after a couple of offers, the 3rd should be the best. Once again, this is just what I've read. My year contract will be up in January, and I hope to get a nice deal on an HDTV receiver to sign up for another year.

Damn. Maybe its time to call. I've been with them for 4 years I think. Signed a contract last February when I got a TIVO.

Yes I used to work for DirectTV customer service and all I can say is yes. They have whats called Customer Retention Group and if any customer mentions cancelling, they usually transfer to this department. They will most of the time offer like Starz or Cinemax free for a few months. Just remember to call on one of those Searching for Satellite moments;)

I almost feel bad since I like the service so much. Wait, why should I? I do the same thing with my cell phone provider and I like them as well!
