Does anyone know if there are more price drops expected on LGA775 C2Qs eventually, or if they'll just be discontinued and vanish from the face of the earth^H^H^H^H^HNewEgg one day?

Actually, I've seen the price go up about $50.00 on the Q9550 over the past couple of months. Glad I got mine back in August for $175.00.

The situation is going to play out exactly like it did with high-end Socket 939 processors. Because lots of people have S775 systems, and the Quads (mainly the superior q6000/q9000 series) were the best s775 chips of all time, they will command a price premium until the platform is basically obsolete. See current prices of X2-4800+ Socket 939 for a hint.

Intel wants you to buy the new core Ix lines. They won't drop prices because that would hurt profits

Intel won't drop prices on the older "obsolete" CPUs, because that would create demand for them again, and hinder adoption of the newer generation of CPUs.

Neither AMD nor Intel have ever, in my experience, 'dropped prices on obsolete' CPU's. They simply stop making them after a while, as newer products take the marketspace over.

When AMD64 came out, AMD didn't magically lower prices to the floor on AXPs. Ditto with Socket 754 procs like the 3500+. Ditto with the Socket 939 FX, Opterons, and X2s. Ditto with Intel and the socket 478 stuff.

It's a stupid business move to keep fabs going and keep pushing out old tech for new lower prices, and nobody does that.

buy it used on ebay, much cheaper than retail pricing will be. Intel won't drop retail pricing on these.

Sadly, this is not the case with either the Intel quads, nor the Socket 939 X2s, in the upper end segment.

Most Q9550 sell for more than $200, most 4800+ sell for well over $150, even though generally faster chips such as the PhII X2, X3, X4 can be found for those prices brand new. It's just the way sockets die out, the highest end chips for the socket keep their price point high even after they've been replaced.

OP here.

One of my rigs is a P5W DH Deluxe, with an E6600 on it, and I've looked vaguely into getting a Q6600/Q6700 for it, and that's EXACTLY what I found. So that board is a dead end.

I was hoping to upgrade my secondary rig, an E5200 on a P43 board, to a quad-core if I could get one for cheap, but... I suspect you guys are right. And $200CAD for a Q8300 isn't really worth it...
