Intel wants you to buy the new core Ix lines.
Intel won't drop prices on the older "obsolete" CPUs, because that would create demand for them again, and hinder adoption of the newer generation of CPUs.
buy it used on ebay, much cheaper than retail pricing will be. Intel won't drop retail pricing on these.
Sadly, this is not the case with either the Intel quads, nor the Socket 939 X2s, in the upper end segment.
Most Q9550 sell for more than $200, most 4800+ sell for well over $150, even though generally faster chips such as the PhII X2, X3, X4 can be found for those prices brand new. It's just the way sockets die out, the highest end chips for the socket keep their price point high even after they've been replaced.
