My friend has Win2k w/ SP2, IE 6.0 (SP 1), and he says it keeps on crashing.

  • Saying that it has encountered a problem and needs to shut down (Then tries to send error report)
  • After the browser re-opens, it will just close by itself during normal browsing
  • Tried the 'repair' option
  • Tried to restore to previous version, nada

Any ideas? I guess, ideally, the best would be to have a full IE 6 download from MS, with all the files, do they do that? I thought it was just whatever came with your OS, and then the updates/upgrades from MS? I'll look for that on the MS site.

Anyone have any ideas, suggestions? I appreciate it.

Thanx in Advance.

I can't FIND the stupid full install file. Maybe I'm just an idiot.

Any help as to where this is? I know they have some sort of "Corporate" or "IT" page for full downloads. But luckily I can't find it.

Thanx again

I've seen this problem at my workplace a few times. Does it do it when your logged in as someone else? Sometime some corruption in the profile will cause this.

KeyserSoze, if you want the "full install", you have to get the Internet Explorer Administration Kit and then use it to download all the necessary files for a full install. There isn't a single package any more because of IE's size.

I think you can still get the full install, but you have to do it from a 9X client. It was like that a few months back, at least. No 9X macines at this site for me to try it on right now...

What you had to do:
Get the little ~500k installer and run it.
Choose the custom install
Under there, there's a button of some sort, and you can tell it to just download but not install IE.
You'd also want to tell it to grab the Win2k/XP setup files.

Sorry I can't be more specific, but I'm just going off memory, here. This won't work in 2k or XP, because it won't even let you choose the Custom option.

I would check this as well, if it only happens under a certain profile than under another profile that has administrative privilages delete their "temporary internet files" folder (so you can be sure you get all of it) and than log on as them and delete the entire IE registry key:
HKCU/software/microsoft/internet explorer
