any dvd manufacteres confirm they will release firmware for dual layer?

i want to buy an 8x +/- dvd rw, but i was wondering if there were any companies who have confirmed that they will release firmware to flash thier drive to a dual layer drive?

AFAIK no one has confirmed anything yet in that regard. From the sounds of it most WON'T do it and instead sell new drives.

Benq has confirmed dual layer support for their current DW822A burner. The firmware upgrade will be available via their website. You'll have to pay for it since it cost Benq money to buy the license.

Its very possible with todays drives, but i doubt it will happen because of royalties. Remember the fiasco in getting the first liteon DVD+R/W drives to burn DVD-R?

No, I don't. But I do understand that all companies care about is money. Well, I guess I'll put off buying a DVD writer until dual layer is available.

I do not think that any of the companies will release them but I think that someone might release their own firmware that makes this happen... guess we will have to wait and see when the technology is available.

Benq has now confirmed the dual layer firmware update will be free for DW822A users. But the updated firmware won't be released until 4th quarter this year. link

BenQ announces DVD+R Double-Layer upgradeable Re-Writer

BenQ announced officially the world?s first 8x DVD+/-RW re-writer with firmware upgrade to DVD+R double-layer recordable drive. BenQ DW822A provides a free firmware upgrade feature to become a double-layer recordable drive. The firmware features 2.4x DVD+R double-layer recording speed and will be available in the beginning of Q4-2004, when double-layer media becomes more accessible in the market.
BenQ DW822A brings users dual DVD+/-RW recording capability and the advanced version of QVideo 2.0 to provide users an easy DV/TV/AV to DVD tool. The drive supports Book Type Management and enables easy switching from DVD+R/RW to the most compatible DVDROM format. Because with the BenQ DW822A, you can now start experiencing seamless real-time recording from multiple video sources, or large data backup capacity, and then upgrade it to a double-layer recordable drive when the media becomes available later this year.
