I wanna get a kit. I've been wanting a kit since I was like 11 years old or something and now that I am older and have money I can get one. Only thing, is that I don't know much about different drum styles .. like if you told me that you wanted to buy a computer I could help you out, but a drum kit???
I'm basically looking for the sound that Ulrich's kit has on "And Justice For All" .. if you're familiar with that album (Metallica) .. so yeah, any input would be great. I'm obviously going double base pedal too. Basically, I want a heavy rock kit that I can get technical with. I can play too, not great, but I can and I can double base too. I'm guessing that I want larger toms??? Basically a five piece with a ride, crash and a highhat ....
Does Tama make good kits?
Any info much appreciated.

oh .. and any good online resources even :)

First of all, if you wanna go with the kind of sets Metallica, Maiden, Megadeth, etc etc use, you're gonna be spending some SERIOUS cash, on the order of several thousand.
My first kit cost me $500, crap obviously, but for learning it did fine, and I still have some parts left.

If it's for learning, and you're not sure if you'll still be playing in 5 years, go with something in the $500-$1000 range, just a basic kit with a bass keg, two toms(is that the English word for small drums? Im not too good at English when it comes to instruments:)), a hihat, a ride and a crash, etc.
Just make sure you get a decent snare drum, as that tends to make a big difference right from go, a bad snare sounds like $hit to even the most musically ungifted.

Then, once you get better, and when you know if you're gonna keep doing it, you can upgrade the kit to include double pedals, more cymbals, etc etc, but for a beginner, it's a total waste.

Oh and yes, Tama makes good stuff as does Pearl, and if you're looking for skins, Remo is good, Paise, Sabian and Zildjian all make good cymbals.

Actually, maybe I understated my skill level, I can actually play and I can use the double base well. If you wanted me to play some metallica or whatever, I probably could (cept for the techy stuff) but the rest of it I'm fine. I'm not a total beginner. I used to be in a band too BTW played drums in that (not my own kit) .. and some ten years of mastering the co-ordination on the bus (yeah, I'm that guy). Double base is like second nature to me at this point.
I want a good kit, I know I will be playing in five years.

edit: and I've played on many crappy kits and when you play a nice kit it's like .. the difference between light and night.

Pick up a Tama then, good stuff that won't let you down, though as I said, if you want the kind of stuff real pro's(Ulrich, McBrain, etc) use, it's gonna cost a small fortune.
Tama has some nice sets, see if you can find a StarClassic somewhere for a decent price.

WOW! :Q

NIce kit ..... what is a 'star classic'? ... like, does that refer to the toms, kick and snare?

Starclassic is a series of sets they make, will include everything you need, don't think it includes a double pedal though, but considdering the amount of dough you'll be spending on a good Tama set, that'll be pocket change ;)

I'm basically thinking about spending somewhere between 1500 to 2000 CND ... which is like .. 1000 to 1300 USD roughly.

edit: and I know I won't be getting Lars' kit, but something that has that type of sound.

I dont know if Tama makes any kits in that price range, haven't looked around in a while.

Have a look at Premier stuff, pretty good at pretty reasonable prices, you should be able to pick up a good set in around your price range.
Or look for a used set perhaps?

I priced out a Tama set for about 1700 CND here .. just not sure what to look for. Maple body? What other bodies? REmo skins .. what about a double base? Who makes good pedals? What about hardware? Anything I should be watching out for, like, "what not to get"? or something?
